Most of Kentucky has been limited to only one medical carrier for individual medical plans. However effective September 1, 2019, a large $5 billion revenue insurance company – with an “Excellent” rating from AM Best – introduced several new medical plans. The new plans offer rate guarantees up to three years and with premiums that are much lower than unsubsidized Exchange Marketplace premiums. Most people are unaware of this recent change, and people can enroll now. (Share the good news)

The plan’s Aetna Open Choice PPO is a national network that provides nationwide coverage. Plus the plans have many extra benefits including free and unlimited telemedicine services that allow members to call or video connect with Physicians 24 hours a day and seven days a week to treat common ailments and receive health care advice.

But this product is not being offered to everyone. To qualify for coverage an applicant must be able to answer ‘no’ to five health questions. Likewise this plan is not eligible for government subsidy.

However premium cost are often 40% to 50% less than the Exchange premium rates. For example, a 50-year-old male may elect option #9, which includes a $5,000 deductible. The the insurance plan pays 100% for covered service for only $292 monthly. (12 month guaranteed rate shown) Compared to an Exchange plan with a $6,700 deductible for a cost of $684 monthly.
